Janus is an interactive sculpture that distorts the user’s understanding of communication.  When the telephone hand set is picked up, the machine begins its operation by pulling a long length of audio tape along its mazelike path and through two different tape decks.  As the user listens to the ear piece s/he will notice the sound of human speech and may speak back in reaction to the incoming audio.  As the user speaks into the mouth piece of the phone, the user’s voice is recorded and added to the audio tape to be heard and reacted to by a future user.
